The River Thames has shaped life in southern England for thousands of years. It carried people and goods long before London became a major city, and the Romans used the Thames as a strategic route. In the Middle Ages, the river sometimes froze solid, allowing Londoners to hold Frost Fairs on the ice with stalls, games, pubs, and coffee houses. Heavy use and pollution later caused the infamous Great Stink of 1858. A pioneering sewer system was consequently built to clean the river and improve public health. Today the Thames supports wildlife, transportation, recreation, and provides water and energy for millions.
