It usually refers to the end of an episode in a series. You are so intrigued that you can’t wait to see what happens in the next episode.
Imagine a character who is just hanging from a cliff and you don’t know if they will fall or be saved.
In the olden days, the last episode of a season was always a big cliffhanger and you had to wait months or even a year to find out what was going to happen next!
You may be too young to remember the villainous oil tycoon JR Ewing getting shot in the show “Dallas” but it is one of TV’s most famous cliffhangers. Around the world it was a very popular topic of conversation as people desperately tried to figure out who had pulled the trigger.
Cliffhangers are also used in other media such as books and radio dramas, and also on social media.
The best cliffhangers keep your audience hooked and super excited to come back for more.
